How.Do

A 1 million people strong DIY community

Praised with the opportunity to build a company from scratch, how would you design it?

We founded How.Do in 2012, with the mission to inspire a world of doers. Starting Emma Rose Metcalfe, Edward Jewson and myself, it was further developed together with an interdisciplinary team of fantastic people from across the globe from our Berlin headquarters.

Together we built a rapidly growing mobile platform of DIY projects, connecting makers with their audience. The app was built to minimize the effort for self publishing DIY content, using short 8 sec audio / image chapters – anyone could make a “micro guide”.

It was featured by Apple in the “Best New Apps” category and appearing regularly in the Top 10 apps in multiple countries. The community reached over 1 million doers.

We raised a significant amount of funding from top tier VCs including Mr. Li Ka-shing (Facebook), Wellington Partners (Spotify), Peter Read (Google Ventures) and had a fab advisory board including Kickstarter co-founder Charles Adler.

How.Do’s holistic approach to community building and product design was featured in Core 77, the Guardian, Wired and numerous tech publications.
